Research: music video convention



 My film will be based around Lil Tjay's latest song, losses. The song itself has a vibrant, steady beat complimented by Tjay's catchy vocals. Usually in music videos, especially one telling a story, there is a protagonist and an antagonist to represent the clash between the two and help deliver the message of song. In this case, the message is taking a loss and being able to bounce back harder than before. 

  •  Actors can range from one main protagonist fighting a problem to a multitude of people involved dancing and having fun depending on the song and director. Regardless of the amount of people, the theme of the video is always explicit and present. 
  •  Costumes in a music video really depend on the song. A hype summer song that focuses on parties and having a good time is likely to have people in swimwear, short pants, flip flops, and t-shirts on the other hand, a love song is likely to have two people with love interests dressed up in suits and dresses in a restaurant or comfortable clothing if the setting takes place in a home. In this case, there is likely to be comfortable casual streetwear being worn, depending on the setting.
  • Props may include a phone, a book bag, or anything else that may symbolize a conflict for the antagonist.
  •  The protagonist in this music video is likely to be sad or frustrated as they fight through the conflicts that the music video presents to emphasize the idea of overcoming conflicts. Towards the actor are likely to be more static as they overcome the said problem.
  • The song is this music video is very melodic and rhythmic. It is easy to vibe to, but not too overwhelming to the lyrics of the piece.

     When we were looking through our footage we realized that some of our outside scenes were a bit grey. All the clouds were blocking out the sunlight which caused us to try and use different filters to try and add more colors to the scene rather than letting it look bland and greyish. Another problem we saw/heard when we replayed our footage was the wind. The wind was blowing quite hard, hard enough that we could barely hear the actors speak. We had to reshoot those scenes because the other scenes became unusable. The cameraman had to film on the opposite side of where the wind was blowing to try and block out as much wind as possible. Another problem we faced was the cars and people. We were filming at a park so a lot of people were, so we tried to talk as loudly as possible to try and drown them out.     Genre research Drama

      In this powerpoint, we were assigned to research a specific genre and analyze the specific conventions and to recognize what makes this genre different than others. To begin, in the drama genre, the different types of lighting used where low key lighting and high key lighting, usually to show the mood in the scene. Common angles included, but were not limited too, low angles, with common movement being reverse zoom, and tracking. Conventionally, costumes depended on the setting. While a drama filmed in the colonial period would likely depict women with dresses while a more modern drama would likely depict women with jeans and a tee.     Genre Discussion

     For the past couple of days, my partner and I have been discussing what genre should we do. We couldn't choose right away at first because we had to discuss the pros and the cons of each genre. We had to choose out of thriller, drama, and action. (3) The first genre we had was the drama genre. The drama has  stories with high stakes and a lot of conflicts. They're plot-driven and demand that every character and scene move the story forward. We  both worked on this genre when we had the genre project, so we both had some knowledge about it. The pros of this genre are that we had the basics of it down, so the research could be kept to a minimum. This genre best fits the pitch that we choose in our earlier discussion.
